The Department of Food, Agriculture and Resource Economics (FARE) at the University of Guelph is home to some of the leading minds on issues related to the interface between agriculture production and environmental policy. We are seeking to raise $1,000,000 for a named research chair to support this valuable work.
Policy issues on the interface between agriculture and the environment, as well as in the bioeconomy, are not going away. In fact, these issues will become increasingly important. The quick pace at which new, environmentally motivated regulations and policies are being introduced often means there is a not a clear understanding of the farm-level impact of these actions.
This presents challenges in understanding the economic opportunities and policy changes affecting bio-resource based value-chains. A dedicated Chair can undertake timely and credible research that informs not just private sector strategy and decision-making, but also the emerging public policy issues related to the bioeconomy.
The interface between agricultural production and the environment continues to attract considerable attention from various quarters. Regulatory and policy action is increasingly being called for as a means to remedy the unintended consequences of agricultural production.
The Chair will drive research related to understanding the impact of such regulations and policies on agricultural sector and farm incomes. Investment in this opportunity will further leverage external research funding through several agencies.
An endowed chair in Agriculture and Bioeconomy would enhance research to:
